Exploring the Conservative Mind

By | August 9, 2012

It pains me to say, but I have several family members and acquaintances who are die hard conservatives. I have always wondered why normally thoughtful, decent people become raving lunatics when it comes to the political affiliation.

But how best to understand if to not explore their natural habitats? From popular conservative trolling grounds, I have collected and examined quotes from the raging right in an effort to try to understand them better.

Unsure of where to begin I googled “conservative news sites” and clicked on the first one, rightwingnews.com They had compiled a list of the 50 most popular conservative news sites. After looking at a couple of random sites (most had awful layouts and were hard to read, thus their passing over for selection) I settled on gopusa.com They had a caption contest for a picture of Michelle Obama being lifted by an unnamed US Olympian.

Regardless of how one feels about her husband’s politics, I think it’s safe to say that Michelle Obama has done traditionally what the First Lady has always done: she is supportive of her husband and she takes on a social issue as a project.

Things got nasty, and fast. Here are the highlights:

Yeah…let’s ignore that Harvard education of hers.

Racism, alive and thriving in the U.S.!

The use of policing sexual language to belittle and control.

So…she’s a slutty lesbian? Who likes to bang secret service men? Pick one insult and stick with it, folks.

And let’s finish it off with some more racism!

This was a truly disturbing experience for me. It is astounding the amount of time and resources that are wasted being so hateful and awful to another person.

I am still confused on how so many rational people in my life can identify with this group. More investigation is needed…

What have your experiences with conservative acquainted been like?
